Our scope:

Make a digital product where high school students can foster deeper associations by visualizing facts to enhance engagement and memory retention with the curriculum.

Hypothesis:

We started off by wanting to give high school students a place where they could share their personal associations to different facts from the curriculum. Our hypothesis was that this would help the class to pin different facts and remember it better, by creating discussions.

“..memories are stored as a network of related items. These items are part of a shared whole.

Any one item serves as a cue for retrieving other parts of the memory network."

- William R. Klemm Ph.D.

Case Study:

We started by sending people in our class and people we knew different tasks via messenger. The task contained some facts and something they had to visualize to help them remember these facts.

The material we got was later gather into collages about the french revolution.

When asking the participants about this experiment, most of them thought it was fun to see their classmates contributions, and they were curious about how their visualizations was connected to the facts they got. That being said, most of them found the collage to be overwhelming.

Sketching and prototyping:

We knew we had to look into alternative ways of showcasing the contributions, to reduce the cognitive overload, so we started sketching and discussing different ideas.

Interviews:

We knew we had to speak with students who were actually attending high school, and not just our classmates that we knew and therefor was biased, in addition to being older than our initial target group.

So we went to a high school in Oslo and talked to students about our idea, to get some feedback and thoughts surrounding this task.

From the interviews we learned that to give value to other peoples associations, it have to be a shared and discussed experience.

That is why we knew that we had to focus on both individual and social experience in our product.
